Truckers encouraged to e-file their Forms 2290 by the deadline
Schedule 1 is available to print within minutes of the IRS accepting your e-filed return
For most truckers and others who use a taxable heavy highway motor vehicle on a public highway in July 2017, the deadline to file Form 2290, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax, and pay the tax due (if applicable) for their vehicles is August 31, 2017.
The Trucking Tax Center on IRS.gov has all the information taxpayers and practitioners will need to file, including links to forms, instructions and additional resources, and is available 24/7. The Trucking Tax Center website has an easy-to-remember internet address: IRS.gov/truckers.
Taxpayers must have an Employer Identification Number to file Form 2290. Apply online for your EIN. Please allow two weeks for the IRS to process EIN requests before e-filing Form 2290. (IRS.gov keyword search: EIN Online)
Electronic filing is required for taxpayers reporting 25 or more vehicles on Form 2290, and the IRS encourages electronic filing for all Form 2290 taxpayers.
Taxpayers can electronically file Form 2290 and pay any Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax due online. Find an approved e-file provider for Form 2290 on the 2290 e-file partner’s page. Taxpayers who e-file Form 2290 receive their IRS-stamped Schedule 1 electronically within minutes. Taxpayers can then print their Schedule 1 and provide it to the state Department of Motor Vehicles without visiting an IRS office.
Taxpayers who choose to visit their local IRS office should be aware that IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers now operate by scheduled appointments. Visit Contact Your Local IRS Office to find the closest Taxpayer Assistance Center and to make an appointment.
