In the Dec. 7 Federal Register, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced that it will convene a public meeting of the Medical Review Board (MRB) on Jan. 6, 2010, in Washington, D.C. The MRB will be considering a number of medical disorders for their impact on driver safety including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, narcolepsy, traumatic brain injury and psychiatric disorders. In a related note, FMCSA published in its recent regulatory agenda one of the medical standards that will undergo rulemaking: the insulin-dependant diabetes standard. The proposed rule is slated for publication in the Federal Register in November 2010 and would allow drivers with insulin-treated diabetes mellitus to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce, without seeking an exemption from the FMCSRs.
