The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will close 13 of its 18 safety rest areas beginning Oct. 19. ADOT estimates that the closings will save about $2.5 million annually as they look to solve a $100 million shortfall. No timeframe has been given for when the safety rest areas will re-open, but ADOT has indicated that they will continue to re-evaluate the closures toward the end of the fiscal year in June 2010. In the past two fiscal years, the Arizona Legislature has transferred more than $533 million from ADOT’s budget to solve the state’s overall budget shortfall.
