On Dec. 17, The Senate Commerce Committee marked up S. 554, the Motorcoach Enhanced Safety Act of 2009, sponsored by Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas). If enacted, the legislation would require motor coaches to install electronic onboard recorders (EOBRs) and implement other safety measures. During debate, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) considered offering an amendment that would extend the EOBR installation requirement to all commercial motor vehicles, including trucks. Lautenberg instead withdrew the amendment and asked it be considered when the Commerce Committee takes up a comprehensive truck safety bill next year.
